1960 Mercedes-Benz 220

This 1960 Mercedes-Benz 220S Ponton Coupe is one of just 830 cars manufactured and is paired with an equally rare 1958 Austermann Type Knospe-K caravan of which only 1,300 were made and few survive to ... day. The car and the caravan on their own are beautiful, but together they’re a masterpiece.

Both have undergone extensive ground-up restorations and have been meticulously refurbished inside and out. The exterior Bahama Blue (L519) paintwork has a flawless deep shine with perfect panel gaps and all exterior trim has been re-chromed. The quality of restoration and the fit and finish of all trim is exceptional.

The interior of both is upholstered in gorgeous Chestnut Red leather with matching carpets. The seats are in perfect condition and have just the right amount of patina. The huge pieces of restored Zebrano wood trim, flow seamlessly through the car and when combined with the chromed interior trim, make the cabin a stunning sight to behold.

The car is fitted with an ultra-rare, steel sliding sunroof with the Webasto wind deflector. In the centre of the dashboard is a fully functioning Becker Grand Prix radio and an automatic antenna. Powered by a super smooth 105-hp inline-six cylinder engine and matched to a four-speed manual transmission this car has covered just 58,000 kilometres.

The caravan is unique not just because its exterior and interior are matched to the car, but because its width expands by almost 1 metre. A short, fun 15 minute routine of releasing safety clips/bolts and turning a crank handle sees it expand from 1.4 metres to 2.5 metres. The seats are trimmed in the same Chestnut Red found in the car and the floor is real mahogany. The bench seats fold into a bed, there is a dining table, wardrobe and kitchenette.
